Google is expanding Google Wallet for families with a new feature that allows parents in the United States to send money directly to their children and teens under 18 while retaining control over how that money is spent.

The new system gives supervised children a secure balance inside Google Wallet. Parents can fund the balance from their own account, monitor transactions, establish spending limits, and lock or unlock access when necessary through Google’s Family Link service.

Children can then use the money for contactless purchases at stores that accept Google Pay using NFC-enabled Android phones or Wear OS devices. Google says the system is designed to give younger users more independence in an increasingly cashless world without requiring parents to open a separate bank account for them.

Google Wallet Adds a Secure Balance for Children

The new feature allows parents in the U.S. to establish a Google Wallet balance for supervised children and teenagers under the age of 18.

Rather than giving children cash or requiring them to have their own bank account, parents can transfer money directly from their own account into the child’s Wallet balance.

Once money is available, the child can use it to make contactless purchases in physical stores through Google Pay.

The child needs an NFC-enabled Android or Wear OS device, and the store must accept Google Pay.

Google is integrating management of the new Wallet balance with Family Link, its existing parental supervision platform.

Parents retain control over both the balance and spending activity. They can transfer money to the child, establish specific spending limits, and monitor transactions in real time.

If necessary, parents can also immediately lock or unlock the balance.

This means a parent can temporarily prevent the child from spending the available money without having to close an account or remove the entire payment setup.

Automated Regular Payments Are Coming

Google is also preparing a feature that will allow parents to schedule automated regular payments.

The capability is not yet available, but it could eventually make the system function like a digital allowance. Parents could automatically add money to their child’s Google Wallet balance on a recurring schedule rather than manually transferring funds each time.

Google has not announced when automated regular payments will become available.

Kids Don’t Need Their Own Bank Account

One of the important aspects of the system is that children do not need their own bank account to use the supervised balance.

Parents provide the funds, while Google Wallet and Family Link provide the payment and supervision tools.

That structure gives families another way to introduce children to digital payments while parents maintain oversight over the money available to them.

Google says the feature is intended to help children develop smart money habits while giving them a degree of financial independence.

Google Wallet Expands Its Family Features

Google has already offered family-oriented Wallet features, but the new balance system expands what parents can do by allowing them to provide money directly to their children.

The update comes as cashless and contactless payments become increasingly common and children encounter digital payments at younger ages.

By connecting the system directly with Family Link, Google can use an existing parental-control platform that many Android families already use for managing devices, applications, and other aspects of children’s Google accounts.

Google Moves Closer to Apple Cash Family

The new capability also brings Google Wallet closer to competing family payment services such as Apple Cash Family.

Apple’s system similarly allows families to provide children with money while maintaining parental supervision over their spending.

Google’s approach integrates those capabilities with Android, Wear OS, Google Pay, Google Wallet, and Family Link, strengthening the company’s broader family ecosystem.

For now, the new parent-funded Google Wallet balance is available to families in the United States. Google has not announced when the feature will expand to other countries.
